We know healthy gums are key to oral health, and we promise to give you the best quality of care.

Understanding Periodontal Health

Your gum tissue is important for your teeth and your oral health. When your gums are healthy, they fit closely around your teeth. This helps stop bad bacteria from getting in and causing infection. But if your gum health gets worse, you might get a condition called periodontal disease.

Periodontal disease is also called gum disease. It is an infection that affects your gums and the bones that support your teeth. This disease can be mild at first but can cause serious damage to your gum tissue and bones. If not treated, it can lead to losing teeth. To prevent periodontal disease, maintaining a good oral hygiene routine is very important. This means brushing and flossing regularly and going for dental checkups.

What is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease is a serious condition that affects many adults. It is an infection of the gums and the bone around the teeth. This disease usually starts with plaque, which is a sticky layer of germs that forms on your teeth. If you do not remove plaque with regular brushing and flossing, it can harden into tartar. Tartar can irritate the gums and cause inflammation.

In the early stage, called gingivitis, the gums may look red, swell up, and bleed easily. With good periodontal care and quick action, gingivitis can often be fixed. But if you don’t treat it, gingivitis can lead to periodontitis, a more serious gum disease.

Periodontitis can harm gum tissue and the bone that supports your teeth. This can make your teeth lose, cause gum recession, and even lead to tooth loss. There are different treatment options to help manage periodontal disease. These can vary based on how serious the condition is, including non-surgical methods like root planing and more advanced surgical procedures.

What is the difference between a dentist and a cosmetic dentist?

General dentists generally offer mostly preventive and restorative treatments which include regular checkups and cleanings, fillings, root canals, and other types of tooth repair. A cosmetic dentist focuses on improving your smile and can include restorative and cosmetic dental treatments. When you are in search of a cosmetic dentist, be sure to research his/her education, training, and experience in the particular procedure you wish to undergo.
